In order to train correctly you should keep your fitness levels to a healthy standard. Remaining fit also aids in times of real combat as you may need to wear down your opponent if he will not immediately yield to your offence, or if you need to outrun your attacker.
Fitness can be broken down into three general classifications of physical endurance (also sometimes referred to as conditioning) which are known as stamina (athletic endurance), strength (muscular endurance) and lastly, suppleness (flexibility). Each of these types of endurance incorporates parts of the others. Although it is best to gain endurance via the performance of the event you want to have endurance in, there are certain types of activities which are more suited to building endurance in different areas. To boost your stamina you need to partake in cardiovascular exercise much like running, skipping, shadow boxing, riding etc. Strength training is what produces muscle tone eg weight training, push-ups, sit-ups, squats etc, and suppleness can be achieved by stretching.
Endurance is lost rapidly which is why it must be trained in frequently, and for best results, you should train harder each time. To increase your level of conditioning you must take part in hard and consistent exercise which exceeds your normal physiological state to a point where substantial respiratory and muscular stress happens. Also, it is important to remember that quality is far better than quantity. It is better to do less properly. To avoid injury, you need to steadily build up your level of conditioning. Train hard, rest, let your body recover and adapt, work harder, repeat.
A vital aspect of training is that you do not want it to be something you dread, or you might not do it. It is best to gradually build up. Start with what ever you feel comfortable doing but make sure you do the exercises you choose properly. Increase your training each week by whatever you feel comfortable doing and continue to do this until you reach a standard you are pleased with. Make or find a plan and then follow it. Training should be an important part of your life, but don't let it overtake it. It is meant to feel good, not to make you miserable.
As well as exercising regularly you should take everyday opportunities to exercise eg walk when ever you can, use the stairs etc. Furthermore, stretch daily. Many people do not appreciate the awesome power stretching has. If you only do one thing towards your physical and mental well being each day, make it to spend 15 minutes stretching. Think positive when exercising.
Finally, it is important to note that physical activity is not the only thing in terms of being fit. You also have to eat right and cultivate a healthy mind.
